As early as the planning stage, contact your insurance agent to determine the amounts of your coverage and limits of liability. Not all policies cover renovation or construction. Know where you stand before you begin this journey.
The contractor and all subcontractors should offer evidence of sufficient insurance coverage.
General liability coverage should be at least $1 million. This will cover damage to your home, a neighbor’s, or bodily injury to a third party. Without that coverage, you could be liable even if it is the contractor’s fault.
Ask to see a copy of the policy or certificate of insurance
Take note of the expiration dates so you know it will be in effect throughout the project and beyond. Review this document with your own insurance representative to be sure all appropriate coverages are in place. Additionally, the renovator should carry worker’s compensation coverage for his own employees. The same goes for subcontractors involved
