Describe your vision/results you want to realize. Such as, a kitchen large enough to serve my whole family, storage for everything that is now on the counter, etc. You need to discuss this with your contractor so all of you share the mental picture that will be the finished product.

Pay special attention to:

Use of space. What will take place there? Will you use existing furniture or others? How quiet does it need to be?

Lighting Will you need more windows? Is existing artificial light sufficient or will new wiring be needed?

Movement. Will the remodel give you the appropriate traffic patterns necessary for entertaining or access to other rooms like the bathroom or kitchen?

By discussing your goals early and often, you should be left with the optimum enjoyment of your new space.
